How to Make a Dolly Real Estate Video

A dolly copies the first thing a buyer does at a showing: walk in. Everything grows as the camera moves forward, so the room feels like a place you enter rather than a picture you look at.

By the Villenza team · Updated

What the dolly does

The camera glides straight forward into the room. Walk the buyer into the room — everything grows as you go in.

Pushes in. Straight push-in. Inside the app, every move also has a 3D preview of the rig and the exact photo map it asks for.

The direction and feel of dolly, drawn on one sample photo — not a rendered clip. Villenza builds the real clip from your own three photos, opening on the first and landing on the last.

Best rooms for a dolly

  • Living rooms with a clear focal point
  • Kitchens with an island to walk toward
  • Primary bedrooms
  • Any room with a view at the far end

The 3 photos to take

Take them in one visit, in the same light. The first photo is where the clip opens and the last is where it lands, so shoot them in the order the camera should travel.

  1. 1

    Opening frame

Stand back and photograph the whole room — this is where the shot begins.

  2. 2

    Halfway in

Half the distance forward — the view the camera passes through.

  3. 3

    Where it lands

Walk right up and photograph the detail the camera should finish on.

Tips for a better dolly

  • Pick the landing detail first — a fireplace, a window, the island — then walk a straight line toward it.
  • Hold the camera at chest height for all three photos.
  • Take the halfway photo exactly on the line between the other two.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Stepping sideways between photos, so the camera has to curve to connect them.
  • A landing photo so close it shows only a blur of countertop.
  • A daytime opening frame and a dusk landing frame in the same set.

Not sure your photos will work? The AI Listing Planner reads a folder of photos, picks the move each room can support, and says what to re-shoot when a set won't work.

Questions

How many photos does a dolly need?

3 photos of the same room: first opening frame, then halfway in, last where it lands. Take them in one visit in the same light — the dolly opens on the first and lands on the last.

Is a dolly the best first video to make for a new listing?

Usually, yes. It is the most forgiving move there is, because three photos taken as you walk into a room already form the path the camera needs. If you only make one clip per room, make it a dolly.

Is the dolly included on every Villenza plan?

Yes — the dolly, like every reveal move, is on every plan at the same 720p HD output; plans differ only in listings per month.
