Should a Real Estate Video Be Landscape or Vertical?

Shoot landscape and cut both: the wide 16:9 version for the listing page, the MLS and YouTube, and a vertical 9:16 version for Reels, TikTok and Shorts. A landscape frame has the room to crop a vertical from; a vertical frame cannot become a wide. Square 1:1 covers the feed and most ads.

Why landscape at the source

A wide frame contains a vertical crop; the reverse loses the room's edges. Villenza renders the clip wide and the editor cuts vertical and square versions from it, so one generation serves every platform.

Where each shape goes

Wide: listing page, MLS, YouTube, email. Vertical: Reels, TikTok, Shorts, Stories. Square: Facebook and Instagram feed posts, most paid placements. The social media guide covers length by platform.

Cropping well

A vertical crop should keep the landing detail centred — the island, the window — and lose the sides, not the top. Rooms with a strong vertical feature (a staircase, a tall window) crop better than wide kitchens; pick the reel's clips accordingly.

Questions

Can I shoot vertical photos for a vertical clip?

The board accepts landscape photos so the clip can serve every shape. Shoot landscape; crop vertical.

Is square still used?

For feed posts and ads, yes. It is the safe shape when you do not know where a video will be shown.
